Dehesa de los Canónigos Winery

In the mid-19th century it changed hands after the Mendizábal confiscation and the Basque businessman Toribio de Lecanda y Campo bought the estate in 1842. After losing his wife, in 1859 it was transferred to his son Teodosio Lecanda Chaves, a renowned architect who built his house in the image of a Basque farmhouse in honour of his land, which is still preserved as a family home today.

The Dehesa de los Canónigos winery stands out precisely for its architecture; the buildings were gradually rebuilt until they became what the winery is today.

After passing through several hands, it was in 1931 when it fell into the hands of the Cid family, the brothers Arturo and Ildefonso, married to Amalia García and Rosario Alonso respectively, were the owners of Dehesa de los Canónigos until the 1960s, when they sold the estate.

Just a few months later, Luis Sanz Busto and María Luz Cid wanted to recover the family property because of the attachment she felt to it. Luis had to abandon his medical studies, but he laid the foundations for what Dehesa de los Canónigos represents today.

Luis Sanz Busto initially sold grapes to the neighbouring Vega Sicilia and began to plant more vines, until in 1989 he decided to bring the first vintage of Dehesa de los Canónigos to market. Belén and Iván Sanz Cid, two of the four children of Luis and María Luz, are now at the head of the winery. From a young age, both were clear about their vocation to continue the family project. Belén has been in charge of Technical Management and Oenology since 1998, after having studied at the University of Valencia and in Bordeaux. She does not hesitate to value her mentors who have helped her so much, Mariano García and Antonio Sanz. Iván, for his part, is in charge of the General Management of the winery, thanks to his training as an agricultural technical engineer and in business management. His stay in the United States gave him his vision to make the wines of Dehesa de los Canónigos known in more than 20 countries around the world.

After a careful selection of the vineyards, it remains for 15 months in American oak barrels of one and two years of age with medium toasting.
