Description
El Enemigo Malbec 2023 is the purest expression of Argentina's high-altitude Malbec, made by Bodega Aleanna — the project that brings together Adrianna Catena (youngest daughter of Nicolás Catena) and winemaker Alejandro Vigil (chief winemaker at Catena Zapata for 13 years and holder of the first 100 Parker points for an Argentine wine). A wine that does not seek to be the most powerful, but the most faithful: an exact snapshot of a place, a soil, an altitude and a harvest.
Made from 90% Malbec and 10% Cabernet Franc from estate vineyards in Gualtallary (Tupungato, Valle de Uco), at an altitude of 1,470 metres above sea level, on deep, rocky limestone soils that give the wine its characteristic freshness and minerality. The grapes come from plots farmed with extreme transparency to reveal the full potential of the new winemaking Argentina.
The 2023 vintage was marked by spring frosts in October-November 2022, which caused a widespread drop in yields and brought the harvest forward by 2 to 4 weeks. The result is very elegant wines with high natural acidity and moderate alcohol (13.5%), with excellent ageing potential according to the winery itself. The grapes were picked at four different times depending on the composition of each soil and plot.
The winemaking shows the utmost respect for the terroir: fermentation with indigenous yeasts at a maximum temperature of 29°C for 20 days, followed by a 15-day infusion with minimal movement. 50% of the wine is fermented as whole bunches. Ageing lasts 15 months, split between century-old French oak foudres (50%), barrels (25%) and concrete (25%), a combination that adds complexity without losing the freshness and identity of the terroir.
Deep ruby red in colour with violet glints. On the nose, expressive and varietal: blueberries and black cherry give way to notes of dark chocolate, walnuts and a fine, elegant minerality typical of Gualtallary. On the palate, medium-bodied with fine, silky tannins, lively and fresh acidity, and a long, slightly mineral and very persistent finish. A serious, subtle and mineral red. 92 pts James Suckling.
Serving temperature: 16°C. Ideal with traditional Argentine asados, chargrilled red meats, game, lamb and cured charcuterie.
