D.O. Navarra covers a large part of the Comunidad Foral de Navarra, from the cooler areas of the north down to the Ribera del Ebro. Historically famous for its Garnacha rosés, today it combines traditional varieties such as Garnacha and Tempranillo with international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.
This combination of traditional and international varieties makes it possible to find very different styles of wine within the same appellation.
Navarra lies at a meeting point between Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. The north has cooler, more humid conditions, while the Ribera Baja has a more Mediterranean, semi-arid character.
The soils are equally varied, although limestone-rich, free-draining and relatively nutrient-poor soils are common, especially in the areas linked to the Ebro basin and its tributaries.
The diversity of the territory means there is no single style. Highlights include fresh, aromatic Garnacha rosés; young reds with marked fruit expression; oak-aged reds from Tempranillo, Garnacha and international varieties; and whites, both young and barrel-fermented or barrel-aged.
Chardonnay is especially important among the white varieties, while in recent years interest has also been growing in traditional varieties such as Garnacha Blanca and Oneca.
