D.O.Q. Priorat lies in the province of Tarragona, in Cataluña, and is one of Spain's two qualified designations of origin, alongside Rioja. It is famous for its vineyards on slate slopes, known as llicorella, and for its Garnacha and Cariñena reds.
Reds are its most characteristic production. They can show great concentration, structure and depth, together with marked freshness when vineyard conditions and winemaking allow.
Typical aromas include blackberry, plum, cherry, black fruit, Mediterranean herbs, spices, balsamic and mineral notes. Ageing can add cocoa, toast, tobacco and other tertiary aromas.
The great wines of Priorat can also show excellent ageing potential.
White wines are also produced, although they make up a smaller share of production.
One interesting aspect of D.O.Q. Priorat is its commitment to identifying the origin of its wines more precisely. Its system includes different origin-related indications, including Vi de Vila, which identifies wines from particular villages, and more specific categories linked to sites and vineyards.
This reinforces the idea that within Priorat there are significant differences between villages, slopes and plots.
