La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas 2023 is one of the most unique wines from Raúl Pérez in Bierzo, made from the Las Gundiñas vineyard, planted in 1910 directly on the route of the Camino de Santiago, in Valtuille de Abajo, the birthplace of winemaker.
This is a field blend of very old vines with Mencía as the dominant variety, completed with small amounts of Bastardo (Trousseau), Garnacha Tintorera and Doña Blanca (white grape). The vineyard sits at the bottom of a hillside on deep soils of clay mixed with limestone, which retain moisture extraordinarily well — especially relevant in the 2023 vintage, a wet and cool year that Raúl Pérez compares to the legendary 2013 for its more aromatic and herbaceous character.
The production is completely artisanal: fermentation with 100% whole stems in large open wooden vats of 5,000 liters, with post-fermentation maceration for between 40 and 60 days. Subsequently, the wine rests 12 months in neutral barrels of 225 and 500 liters. It is bottled without fining or filtering. A very limited production of just 5,000 bottles.
Bright cherry color with garnet reflections. On the nose, the 2023 shows a more aromatic and herbaceous profile than other vintages, with notes of raspberry, pomegranate, currants, wild flowers and mountain herbs. In the mouth it is vibrant, fresh and floral, with fine and well-integrated tannins from the stem, lively acidity and a long and mineral finish.
Ideal for grilled meats, stews, sausages and cured cheeses. Serve between 15 and 17°C.
