The Riesling grape is one of the noblest white varieties in the world, originating from the Rhineland region of Germany, and renowned for its extraordinary finesse, versatility, and longevity.
Main Characteristics
- Vibrant acidity: It retains an extremely high natural acidity even when ripened late, providing the freshness needed to balance its sugars.
- Aging potential: Unlike most white wines, Riesling improves in the bottle for decades thanks to its acidic backbone.
- Terroir expression: It is highly sensitive to soil type; slate imparts unique mineral and smoky notes.
- Aromatic profile: It stands out for its citrus (lime, grapefruit), green apple, and peach notes. With age, it develops a distinctive and highly prized kerosene and beeswax aroma.
Contrary to the popular myth that all Riesling is sweet, it produces a wide range of styles:
- Trocken (Dry): Very fresh, tense, mineral, and food-friendly.
- Semi-sweet or Off-dry: With subtle residual sugar balanced by its piercing acidity.
- Sweet and Late Harvest: Complex dessert wines, concentrated through noble rot or freezing in the vineyard (Eiswein or ice wine)
