Domain of Atauta

Dominio de Atauta is a winery located in the unique Atauta valley, in the province of Soria, within the Ribera del Duero. It was born with the purpose of rescuing and enhancing a unique vineyard, made up of hundreds of small plots of centuries-old vines—many of them pre-phylloxera—planted in glass at almost 1,000 meters of altitude. The extreme climate, the diversity of calcareous soils and the great temperature range give the grapes a very marked personality. The winery works with a philosophy of minimal intervention and sustainable viticulture, producing wines that express the essence of the valley: elegant, fresh fine reds with a marked minerality, which reflect both the centuries-old tradition and a modern vision of wine.

Dominio de Atauta is built on rock on a valley slope, surrounded by vineyards. It slopes down four levels towards the valley, which allows us to make our wines using gravity without damaging the excellent raw material.

The grapes are always harvested by hand and arrive on the upper floor, from where they fall by gravity into the tanks located on the next floor. On the third level is the barrel warehouse, where there are about 600 French oak barrels.

The Atauta region has vestiges of a rich wine-making past, including El Plantío, a collection of 141 wineries and 25 wine presses dug into limestone. Most of them were built during the 19th century, although the first records of the existence of vineyards in the area date back to 1201.
