The current building dates from 1963 , when the distillery was rebuilt to revitalize the local community after decades of closure. Its architecture is simple and functional , blending into the coastal landscape, with direct views of the sea and the mountains known as the Paps of Jura .
Inside, the distillery boasts exceptionally tall stills , among the tallest in Scotland. This design favors the production of a light, clean, and smooth spirit, as only the finest vapors reach the condenser. This technical feature defines the elegant character of Jura whisky.
The distillery uses pure water from local springs , which flow down from the island's hills, and primarily produces unpeated or very lightly peated whiskies, although it also occasionally produces peated editions. Maturation takes place in a carefully selected range of casks, mainly American bourbon and sherry casks , as well as other types of oak for special expressions.
More than just a distillery, Jura is a symbol of resilience and isolation , deeply intertwined with island life. Its wild surroundings, tranquility, and artisanal character are reflected in balanced, approachable whiskies with a strong sense of place.
