The D.O. Toro is located in Castilla y León, in the province of Zamora, on the banks of the Duero river. It is famous for its reds made from Tinta de Toro, the local variant of Tempranillo, although it also covers white and rosé wines.
The vineyards lie at roughly 620 to 840 metres of altitude. Sandy loam soils predominate, with sand, clay, gravel and pebbles, generally poor in organic matter.
The climate is extreme continental, semi-arid and with Atlantic influence. Rainfall is around 350-400 mm a year, with very cold winters, hot summers and sharp temperature swings.
Reds are the star. Those made from Tinta de Toro usually show red and black fruit, intensity, body and firm tannins, with excellent ageing potential. The D.O. includes young wines, roble wines and wines with regulated ageing.
